One of the most famous battles in Scottish history is laid bare at the award-winning Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre. With the site now fully restored – making it as close a representation as possible to the original battlefield – you can expand your knowledge of that fateful conflict, which claimed the lives of 1,200 in the space of one bloody hour, and learn about events which led to the confrontation itself. Not only can you walk in the footsteps of the characters involved in the fighting, thanks to the new, state-of-the-art interactive exhibition, but you can watch a Living History presentation which brings the battle vividly to life. There’s also an animated battle table, sketching the topography of the field and offering an insight into the forces’ tactics on the day. After swotting up on the particulars of Culloden, head to the roof terrace for a bird’s eye view of Culloden Moor as it stands today. You can also see displays of authentic weapons and artefacts found on the boggy ground. Operated by the National Trust for Scotland, the visitor centre boasts environmentallyfriendly facilities and a large restaurant serving a range of delicious dishes.
